Mamajuana might be one of the oldest distilled drinks in the Americas — older than rum itself, according to some historians, since it traces back to Spanish colonizers blending European alcohol with the herbal teas of the native Taíno people. The drink was actually banned under the Trujillo dictatorship except by medical prescription, before a Dominican named Jesus Rodriguez helped popularize it in the 1950s as a folk remedy and aphrodisiac. Candela built its rum as a modern, bottled tribute to that tradition: distilled from 100% single-origin sugarcane juice rather than molasses, matured in the Dominican Republic's tropical heat, aged further in bourbon casks, then infused with traditional Mamajuana botanicals and a touch of honey. The brand relaunched with premium new packaging in December 2025, developed with the same design agency behind several well-known spirits brands. Bottled at 30% ABV, community reaction has generally run enthusiastic — several tasters compare it to a spiced version of Zacapa, and it's found a following as a legitimate alternative to orange liqueur in a Mai Tai, though a few found the botanical bitterness not to their taste. Best sipped over ice or as a genuinely different cocktail base.
