Evan Williams 1783 is the small batch of the line, named for the year Evan Williams opened Kentucky's first commercial distillery on the Louisville riverfront — and Bourbon Culture notes it's a bit sweeter than the Bottled in Bond, likely because older barrels go into it. Evan Williams is Heaven Hill's flagship value line, the second-best-selling bourbon in the world; Heaven Hill is the largest family-owned distillery in Kentucky, run by the Shapira family since 1935. 1783 Small Batch is the Heaven Hill bourbon mash bill — 78% corn, 10% rye, 12% malted barley — batched from up to 300 barrels, with older stock in the blend than the Black Label, and bottled at 90 proof since the 2022 relaunch that raised it from 86 and gave it the new label. The Whiskey Jug's readers keep it on the shelf beside the Bottled in Bond; Bourbon Obsessed reviews it alongside the rest of the line. Expect the Heaven Hill signature — caramel, vanilla, peanut, and brown sugar — in a rounder, sweeter, slightly older register than the Black Label: honey, dried apple, cinnamon, and toasted oak on a medium body with a warm, moderately long finish, the youthful grain notes covered better than in the bonded. Honest note: 1783 and the Bottled in Bond are the two smart buys in the range — this one for sipping sweetness, the White Label for proof. For an Old Fashioned, a Manhattan, or neat.
