Trifolium repens ‘Atropurpureum’ is a richly colored ornamental clover that forms a low carpet of chocolate-burgundy leaves edged in fresh green. The distinctive three-part foliage becomes more intensely colored in brighter light, while rounded white flower clusters rise just above the leaves in late spring and summer.
This mat-forming perennial grows approximately 3–4 inches tall and spreads 12–24 inches or more as its creeping stems root along the ground. Hardy in USDA zones 4–9, it grows in full sun to partial shade and prefers average to moist, well-drained soil. It tolerates light foot traffic and can serve as an ornamental lawn substitute in smaller areas.
Use ‘Atropurpureum’ between stepping stones, along border edges, beneath taller perennials, over spring-blooming bulbs, or spilling from containers and retaining walls. As a clover, it can fix nitrogen and help enrich the soil while its flowers provide forage for bees. It spreads vigorously, so plant it where its growth can be enjoyed or easily contained.
